Boomers don’t sit on your plans to downsize

Boomers don't sit on your plans to downsize

1.4 million expect to buy according to the Boomers Trends Survey

There is no one size fits all when it comes to where you will live in your golden years. So I’ve compiled resources  here for you to get moving. Firstly with the Royal LePage Boomer Trends survey. Current home prices in Mississauga have made retirement generally unaffordable in this big city. So my advise is Boomers don’t sit on your plans to downsize because the exercise will take some planning and time.  If this is for you then check out my list of Top 10 Places To Move When Downsizing Your Mississauga Home

According to the Royal LePage survey, 49% of Ontario boomer respondents in the survey are planning to purchase a home in the next five years:

• 45 per cent are most likely to purchase a detached home
• 32 per cent are most likely to purchase a condominium
• 10 per cent noted strongest interest in a semi-detached/town home
• 5 per cent said a recreational property.

Royal LePage Boomer Trends survey

Albeit many Boomers  currently living in Mississauga will choose to stay in their big family homes and renovate.  Conversely, 20% of them are making plans to sell the big family home and downsize to a more suitable place. They’ll move to the outskirts of the GTA and downsize to a smaller home. Not to mention pocketing the resulting savings will help fund retirement. Instead for others the retirement plan is to move up to a high rise Condo or townhouse in the city. Still others are purchasing  a cottage up north or recreational home in the sunny south.

That’s a lot to think about!

Baby Boomers are on the move, according to the recent Royal LePage Boomer Trends survey, released August 8th 2018. As many as 1.4 Million boomers across Canada expect to buy a home in the next five years. Once again the Baby Boomer bubble is making a big impact on the housing market.

Further, when it comes to downsizing, the survey shows many are open to condo living but most would prefer to remain in a detached home. Still downsizing and life transition for retirement means many Boomers on the move are searching smaller cities, towns and recreational areas with things to do!  Moreover, not an easy task at best!

In addition, here is what the survey shows Canadians have on their minds nearing or entering retirement:

  • 56 per cent of boomers consider their local housing market unaffordable for retirement.
  •  9 per cent of boomer parents do not expect their kids to move out until after the age of 35; this number is almost three times higher in British Columbia
  •  32 per cent of boomers looking to buy in the next five years most likely to purchase a condo
